Busby SEO Challenge – Psychological warfare

The Busby SEO Challenge is a very interesting contest… As all other SEO Challenges (Busby or not), the success relies on many different things. The most obvious ones are content and links, but those don’t do everything… In order to win, you need to have a little something more than just fresh & dense texts and numerous & juicy backlinks, since most competitors (so called Busby SEO challengers) can have both. The fact is that the Sphere Team has a lot more than content and thousands of incoming links…

Busby SEO Challenge Warfare

Some could say, we have the number, since it is well known we are a team, composed with about 30 people (= busbies). Well, I would say, yes we do. But it is mostly a bad excuse used by some people to explain their “unsuccess”… Many other teams are at game against us (we hail them, by the way, as we hail all those who challenge by themselves). Number doesn’t mean success, and believe me, coordinating thirty Frenchmen is a harder task that winning a SEO Challenge ;)
While it’s obviously easier to get a lot of backlinks (since most of us are passionates or professionals, having our own knowledge and networks, and because we have a lot of friends), it is mostly harder to get the right strategy, and to all go into the same direction. We have the huge advantage of being friends, to know each other pretty well (many dinners together around a drink render things easier), and mostly, not to give a damn about the money. What we all want has nothing to do with dollars – since we won’t use it personally -, and even has nothing to do with glory – since most of us will remain unfamous and far from the “spotlights” after our winning -. We just do it for the fun, and that makes a big difference with several competitors of the Busby SEO Challenge.
But that’s not what I wanted to explain on this article… So let’s come back to my initial question. What is this little bonus that will make us win this SEO challenge ?

So no, “the number” is not the answer I expected. Neither is the reason why we challenge to the Busby. What else ? (as could say Georges Clooney, who is known as being a great fan of Sphereteam’s Busby Seo Challenge)

The weakness of other Busby competitors ? In fact, without “shoe-polishing” anyone, I don’t think they are real losers on this contest. We know a lot of contestants, who already have met us in the SERP, during former SEO contests, such as Globalwarming Awareness2008 or V7ndotcom Elursrebmem, for instance. Most of them are cool, good and fair play, and we appreciate their job and methods (believe me, our members have analyzed in depth their strategies, codes and supports ;D), and some of them have even become friends. The fact to fight against others on a contest, if it could seem destructive and unfriendly, is the contrary. For prove, the fact that most of my best friends on the Web, are people I have competed against on other SEO challenges. Now, we are a team, joining our strengths to beat others (or “meet others”), which is a beautiful thing (it looks like the comic books/mangas, such as Dragon Ball, where the bad guys become the good one, helping the first good guy to defeat a bigger villain, which becomes also a good guy after wise, etc.), don’t you thing ? As older competitors which I personally appreciate, I could name zero3 (which organizes the “Ręceprecz odtybetu” polish SEO challenge), or Benj (which was our “best enemy” on the last contest), which have both joined us on Seosphere
On this Busby challenge, we begin to see outsiders coming or becoming dangerous (not enough dangerous, my friends), and I could say, that most people seem doing well or at least having fun, on this contest. This year’s Benj seems to be Pogung who we all really appreciate for his Indonesian team, his skills and his sense of humor, and I’m sure he’ll become our friend, after we win this contest (I just hope that $500 will be enough for you to come visit us, in France, on September, when we’ll organize a gargantuan dinner with the other $5000+$2000 LOL). We have already made other friends, such as Exeko, who seems to really appreciate our team, even if he’s not gentle with our girls… My friend, you’ll be invited to our Busby winning dinner, this way, you’ll explain us the reason why you chose to duplicate our Seocontest2008 article (lol, sorry, it was not possible to avoid this one).
We really appreciate many other competitors, and I just hope none will be pissed not to have been listed here… So, no… Others are doing great, it’s not the good answer, please try again…

Our methods ?
Some are trying to give us a colored hat… Black, gray or pink ?
Sincerely, I don’t really like hats, and since we all unfortunately spend more time in front of the screen than outside, we don’t really fear the Sun, and have no use for hats, whatever color they are…
While we clearly prefer contests (such as the Polish ones, for example) where there is the “everything is permitted” rule, letting Google as the only judge (as in real life), we are not dumb, and we always respect the organizers’ rules… We know that even if we are part of the contest (so it’s a potential participation), some SEO Challenge organizers could not really appreciate our presence on “their” contest. Competing against a known formation, which has already won another SEO international Challenge, could have discourage more than one… Several people would love a disqualification to our team, and that may be the reason why many are trying to allocate us a colored hat. Besides, it may be easier to attribute its own defeat to this supposed “black magic”, than just accept the fact one didn’t deserve to win…

So what ? Is there something, a secret mixture, a mystic knowledge, or a demoniac strategy behind all this ?
In fact, there is one… Even many things. We prefer keeping most of them for us, since we intend to win next-year’s international challenge with the same team, so we cannot give you all our secrets.
But at least I can give you a trick, in two words : Psychological warfare !

The Taggle Team managed to do it during the V7n contest, the Sphere Team did it during the Seocontest2008, and we are doing the same on this Busby SEO Challenge… We are frightening you !

Whatever the rank our page is, we are omnipresent. While we are first or sixth, the threat is always on all other competitors. We are everywhere, and, on all Google pages, our mark lies… There’s nothing you can do about it. This pressure will make you do the wrong move, and sooner or later, there is a over-optimization you will do, or something you will not do, that will make you fall.
While we are first, everyone is disgusted and demoralized, while we are not, all the ones who are in front of us, shaking while fixing their “rear mirror”, until their lethal mistake… There is always a tricolor shadow above all Busby SEO Challenge SERP, and this is so destabilizing… Those rumors of black hat, evil methods, secret forums and other SEO warfare things, that many spread, this just helps us getting stronger… Not in facts, but in minds.

Now I could tell you something, that could make you think of, or even have nightmares during nights… What if we did it on purpose ? What if we retrograded our page on the result pages, voluntarily, just to test how we could jump up to the 1st position ?
Eh eh, you may think I’m bluffing, you may think it part of a “psychological warfare” strategy, in order to frighten you. Maybe… Who knows ?

The fact is that yesterday, for those who are not checking daily the results, we have jumped from 7th to 1st position on Google.com (+13 positions on Google.fr)… Do you really think, it is just the chance ? Hey, seriously ? You do ? Ah ah, I really love your naivety sometimes…
Anyway, I don’t need you to believe me on my word. But even if you think I’m bluffing, nothing we’ll be as before, now. Because, even if you manage to be placed first or second, you’ll never be quiet or sure of your victory again. We have tried a method against Benj’s site, on the last contest. It was not perfect, because of a little lack from us (something we didn’t understand at this time), but we managed to pass him, on the last sprint, by this method… We didn’t know if we could do the same with a brand-new domain such as sphereteam.com. So, we have tried. The first step was to go rear, which is not a common task. Yet it was easy enough, since other competitors where working hard on content and links, and since we didn’t act really actively, mostly on backlinks (if we compare with the dozen of thousands links we had done on our competing page during Seocontest2008).
Well, you’ll understand that I cannot tell you how our little secret works. I cannot tell you neither if we’ll try to keep this position or if we’ll reserve you a little surprise like the recent one, for the end (in fact, we are still discussing on this). But, whatever, now, I’m sorry my friend, but we know we’ll win this one… Don’t have this disappointed face, dude, you know that a $2000 challenge is quite good anyway (even if some of our teammates are considering winning the second place too, with their own page).
I’d like to help you find the trick, but I would have to kill you after you knew :P

I can just tell you, that the June 26th Google events, and, indirectly, Pogung’s site (and also something we discovered about WP), have helped us to understand something primordial on our last week’s strategy (which kick us up). Keep focusing on (fresh) content my friends, keep focusing on links, my beloved, I’m sorry to tell you that you are going besides something else, really important.
Just cross the fingers that you’ll find what, soon enough, because now that we’ll have this secret weapon, we are launching the traditional and massive ones…

The Sphereteam war machine is on march !

Vous avez raison, plus d’amis, c’est plus de backlinks. Mais plus de liens vers votre site ne veut pas forcément dire plus de liens de qualité…

I’m still at page 6 and have stayed there for quite a time already. I honestly have no idea how you guys are doing it but I think the “team” effort is really doing a lot of help. In my case, I’m a one-man band trying to push my way up the Busby ladder but so far all I’ve seen is stagnancy.

Anyways, good luck to you guys! I hope I make it at least to page 1 by the end of the contest. :)

but right now, it is winter time in Australia, isn’t it ?

but in France, we also say :” le facteur sonne toujours deux fois !” (postman always rings twice !)

Thanks for all those comments, you, Busby challengers…

Just to let you know that, after a long reflexion, I have finally figured out what color could be the Sphereteam’s hat… It may be green (as the green berets), not because it is the color of tree’s leaves (everyone knows my love for forests – and challenges, btw. – with the Brutal Woods), but because we are now wearing camouflage uniforms, and are on march to conquer Google’s first page… (and tomorrow, THE WOOOORLD! Ah Ah Ah! … Euh… Oops… Sorry, I didn’t take my pill today…)

Victory is not everything : Total victory is !

You’ve done a really nice job sphereteam! You’re on top right now but soon it will change. Looking at the competition right now, well I guess everyone’s having a good time building links. This is a healthy competition. Good luck to everyone!

Jage > I guess that Google loves cheese, red wine and white bread. Matt Cutts is in love with France and French people, so we are not touched by the Sandbox :)
More seriously, sandbox is not a fatality, and an heavy netlinking can be processed on a site without penalizing it. It just have to be done smartly…
